The journey of preparing for the baby, bringing them to life, and nurturing them soon after they are born is a very sensitive time for the family and any kind of loss, stress, or difficulty can be detrimental for your mental health. It can also have long-lasting effects.

There can be multiple sources of trauma during the entire period of bringing the baby into the world. It can happen during pregnancy, at the time of delivery and even after delivery. Trauma can result from a physical injury or a severely distressing event such as loss of any kind, previous trauma of any nature, health challenges for the newborn baby, medical negligence or complications, poor support and care, stressful relationships or emergency situations.

The trauma experienced during this time can manifest in different ways:

  • Postpartum depression

  • Anxiety

  • Difficulty bonding with the baby

  • Detachment and feeling of guilt

  • Postpartum PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

It is important to realize that there is a high chance that you are living from an illness manifested from this trauma and you are not to be blamed for it. No matter how overwhelming the trauma may seem, the good news is that it can be treated with professional help.

At Thrive, we have four psychologists who can support you in dealing with your traumatic experiences - Dr. Vassiliki Simoglou, Dr. Kate Prozeller, and Pashmi Khare (M.Sc.).
